A Great Place to Emigrate

Since I discovered Substack a few weeks ago, it's rare that a day goes by without checking out what's new. Naturally, since I'm a travel enthusiast and publish travel articles, that's what I look at most. This time, I came across a post by Alexander Verbeek about a survey of American citizens conducted on Expatsi. The question was which country they would emigrate to if they felt American democracy was threatened.

And this was the Top 10 resulting from the survey:

1. Portugal

2. Spain

3. United Kingdom

4. Canada

5. Italy

6. Ireland

7. France

8. Mexico

9. New Zealand

10. Costa Rica

Seeing that the second country chosen was Spain, where I live, I understand the Americans' choice. There are few differences between them; Portugal has everything, has a lot of charm, and is still not as touristy as its neighbor.

It's a country with a lot to choose from. If you're looking for something less crowded, you can avoid the big cities and the southern coast. Seek out your local villages, explore the city center if you have the chance, and you'll be amazed. The food is excellent, the people are very friendly... And the coast, for surfers, is a paradise. If I had to choose, I wouldn't know where to start.

I can't say anything bad about my Portuguese neighbors.

It's a country I visit almost every year; after all, it's very close by. Just this year, I walked the Portuguese Way to Santiago for a week, a stretch I'd never done before.

I've been to Lisbon and Porto several times, I've hiked the north, and I've been to the Algarve quite a bit... And yet, I've only written one post about Portugal in all the time I've been publishing on my blog (cogetumochila.com). And that was about a hiking trail.

This is a famous trail located in the Algarve, considered one of the best in Europe. If you're not familiar with it, it's called the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, which translates to the Seven Suspended Valleys Trail. I recommend it... during the off-season. The trail passes through places like Praia da Marinha and Benagil Beach, two of the most famous in Europe.

If you don't have Portugal on your list of future trips, don't hesitate to add it. As you can see, many people are planning to visit.

Un lugar acertado para emigrar

Desde que descubrí Substack hace unas semanas, raro es el día que no entro a ver qué novedades encuentro. Como es lógico, publicando notas sobre viajes y siendo un enamorado de ellos, de ese tema es de lo que más miro. En este caso me encontré con un post de Alexander Verbeek que trataba sobre una encuesta entre ciudadanos estadounidenses realizada en Expatsi. La pregunta era sobre a qué país emigrarían si sintieran que la democracia estadounidense se viera amenazada.

Y éste fue el Top-10 resultante de la encuesta:

3. Reino Unido

4. Canadá

5. Italia

6. Irlanda

7. Francia

8. México

9. Nueva Zelanda

10. Costa Rica

Viendo que el segundo país designado era España, donde yo vivo, entiendo la elección de los estadounidenses. Hay pocas diferencias entre ellas, Portugal lo tiene todo y aún no es tan turístico como su vecino.

Es un país que tiene mucho donde elegir. Si buscan algo menos saturado, pueden evitar las grandes ciudades y la costa del sur. Busquen en sus pequeños pueblos, recorran el interior si tienen oportunidad y se sorprenderán. La comida es excelente, la gente es muy amable... Y la costa, para los amantes del surf, es un paraíso. Si tengo que elegir, no sabría por donde empezar.

La realidad es que no puedo decir nada malo de mis vecinos portugueses.

Es un país que visito casi todos los años, al fin y al cabo lo tengo muy cerca, al lado como quien dice. Este mismo año ya estuve caminando durante una semana por el Camino Portugués a Santiago, un tramo que no había hecho antes.

He estado varias veces en Lisboa, alguna menos el Oporto, he recorrido el norte a pie, al Algarve he ido bastante... Y, sin embargo, apenas he escrito un post sobre Portugal en todo este tiempo que llevo publicando en mi blog (cogetumochila.com). Y fue sobre una ruta de senderismo.

Se trata, no obstante, de una famosa que hay, precisamente, en el Algarve y que está considerada como una de las mejores de Europa. Si no la conocen, se llama el Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, que se traduce al español como Ruta de los Siete Valles Suspendidos. Se la aconsejo... en temporada baja. Pasa, entre otros lugares, por la Playa da Marinha o por la playa de Benagil, dos de las más famosas de Europa.

Si no tienen a Portugal en la lista de futuros viajes, no tarden en añadirlo. Como ven, hay muchas personas que tienen intención de visitarlo.
